Hmmmm…..Will I like David Tennant as much???
I really appreciate the help I get from the cat whilst I do yoga poses, planks, and general stretching. Apparently I am an obstacle course in his world.
Little man is under the weather so we are snuggling on the couch watching Dr. Who. Aaahh Sunday.
So excited about surgery today. First up, dude who got hurt when he drove drunk and was unrestrained. Oh and did I mention he was taking his kids to school and they also were not wearing seatbelts? Oh and that he told the anesthesiologist that he better not have pain when he wakes up. Second patient is a chronic drug abuser who has one below knee amputation and now is getting an above knee...
Kids are funny
At my child’s insistence, I diapered a monster truck and a tractor and read a book about hippos to a rubber duck.

Mr. Power is obsessed with trucks - garbage, semi, mail. He has also realized that we can play some of these on YouTube. I just spent a half hour watching video of garbage men picking up garbage. He was so excited and said “bye” to them each time they moved on. He also cheered. Hilarious.
I just saw my son walking through the house in a Star Wars t-shirt, no diaper, and snow boots. Do I intervene or let him enjoy his freedom while he can??

Painting
With the recent knockdown of a major wall in our house we are feeling newly inspired to decorate. One of the major decisions was to paint all of the common areas. It was what I called “living in suburban hell beige”. It is now a nice light grey with a few darker grey accent walls. What a difference. Also what a pain considering we have a two story great room and entry way. It will be...
Chasing that Bourbon!
Halfway through the chase. The first leg was really tough. We started at 11:15 and the sun was beating down as we ran uphill for 3.5 miles. I wish I could say we then had a downhill but no, more uphill. A total of 7.1 miles and certainly not my best. We had to walk (we had two teams so no one ran alone) but so did most everyone else. We all met up at Makers Mark for another bourbon taste and a...

Seen at Sam's Club
First guy in front of me:
Sam’s club sized package of bacon, various Atkins’ diet snacks, noticeably smaller pair of jeans.
Second guy in front of me:
Two 24 pack cans of Bud Light and a bouquet of flowers.
I wonder which one will be more successful….

A Biker is Born
I have had a hate-hate relationship with biking ever since I decided to train for my first triathlon several years ago. At that time I had not been on a bike since I had been a child. I rode Bre’s mountain bike for my first race (which was torture by the way) and came in last (OK there were other factors involved there too). That humiliation made me want to prove I was better than that....
Running, Uninterrupted
Last week marked my first consistent week of running after a six week hiatus. I only did 9 miles total but it felt good to be back. For the last several years, including my pregnancy and post-partum the most I had taken off from running was one week. I think this would have been fine if I had also been consistent with strengthening and cross-training. Unfortunately, I was not and my weaknesses...
Cats are pillows
Why is it that my cat will find any opportunity to lay on me but completely resists my using him as a pillow?
It seems that Mr. Power’s displays of affection involve pinches, bops on the head, and all sorts of hybrid wrestling moves. I think Bre found my concern about his aggression a little amusing as he gently reminded me that we do indeed, have a boy. I might have to invest in some full body armor.
Good Day
1. Got up and hit the gym.
2. Was lucky enough to nab the last extra small scrub shirt so I didn’t almost flash people all day.
3. Got to eat breakfast AND lunch (though I never did use the bathroom or drink any water…..)
4. Got to cut into a guy’s leg and have copious (and I do mean copious) amounts of puss squirt out. Yes, I know that’s gross but dammit if you are...
Caught!
Came out of the bathroom to find Mr. Power dancing to his music mirror. He was so into it he didn’t even notice me. That kid loves to dance.
There is a guy on that Gordon Ramsay master chef show who looks just like Otho from Beetlejuice. I can’t stop laughing.

First of all, I hate the term. Hate it. Second of all, can women not just be? People make fun of and chastise pregnant women who eat extra, “waddle,” and gain lots of weight. I can’t tell you how many people told me to stop running when I was pregnant; that it wasn’t good for me or the baby; that I should use my pregnancy as a reason to indulge, relax, and not...
It cracks me up that he looks under the table.

I was just having this discussion with Bre. I continuously see photos of friends on Facebook on their latest vacation without the kids, or discussion of book clubs, movies out, girls night out, etc. As a parent of a toddler I can tell you that you definitely need time not only for yourself, but also as a couple if you want to continue to have a healthy relationship. Still you are now a family...

An Open Letter
Dear Kentucky:
I do not care about the Derby. I like horses, roses, mint Juleps, and the excuse to get dressed up but I do not know what horses are running, I do not plan on betting, and (gasp) may not even watch the race.
Orphalin Annie
P.S. I also don’t care about UK basketball. In fact, I do not even like to watch basketball. I do like bourbon though, so I guess there’s that.

I was recently at home and as usual, was struck once again by the religious billboards which abound on the side of every highway in St. Louis. My new favorite, the one where abortion will not only kill your baby but give you cancer. I cannot explain the ire which arises in me when I see this. I miss home but find it difficult to think about going from one place of religious intolerance (oh hail...
1. Have I mentioned that I love Netflix on demand?
2. Why did they ever cancel Better Off Ted?
3. Is it bad if Mr. Power seems to be genuinely interested when we watch Arrested Development?

Ahhh Refreshed!
My first full night of sleep in a year and a half. Truly a full night. No getting up to go to the bathroom, no getting up to nurse, I was dead to the world. I woke up on my own before my alarm clock at 5:30. I feel great (my top side was a little uncomfortable without the night nursings) and ready to hold down the fort while the residents have their interviews - morning OR and the consult...

Mr. Power, an update
Mr. Power will be 10 months in a few days. I can’t believe that we are coming up on his first birthday! It is amazing to watch him learn and discover things. I feel that in the last few weeks in particular he has really made strides.
1. He is crawling like mad (he is super fast) and pulls up on everything. He has even been standing without holding onto anything for a few seconds. We...

Cycle Stupidity, Part Deux
In my last post about the bike I wrote about my inability to clip in. I have decided that for now we will put the SPDs back on and I will look into Eggbeaters. Sadly, that is the least of my problems. I had Bre take a photo of me on the trainer and it was quite eye-opening. I look like the hunchback of Notre Dame! I didn’t realize how awful I looked. I showed the photo to a few people...

A Lone Mother
There are many things that are difficult to prepare for when you have a child - the shear exhaustion from not getting enough sleep and trying to keep up with everything, the overwhelming joy you can experience from the smallest things like the smile your child gives you, the desire you have instinctually to protect him from any and all bad things that can happen. What has surprised me the most...

Cycle Stupidity
The holidays are over and I am starting to look at the spring race season to decide what I am interested in doing this year. Bre and I have decided that we want to lay low this year (more on that in another post) so I am trying to really hone in on my specific goals. I want to focus more on running longer distances faster but I also plan on doing some local triathlons. It’s been difficult...
Perspectives
I was having a conversation with a coworker of mine the other day about how our lives have changed since having kids. She has a son around M. Power’s age and was expressing how overwhelmed she was by everything. I smiled and nodded but inside I was rolling my eyes. She works part-time, in the office (she at least gets to use the bathroom and get a drink when she wants), she is not...

Modern Life
I have become acutely aware of redundancies, of non-necessities, of things I truly enjoy, and what I want. I have been working on simplifying my life to reflect this. We found we weren’t watching our 100 or so TV channels and didn’t like throwing money at the cable company so we downgraded to the most basic plan which allows us to watch the major networks and a few other random...
Driving Annoyances
Winter is here. You know it kind of happens every year around this time. It gets cold, it snows, maybe sleets. This is Kentucky, not Florida so this is kind of expected. At least by me. Apparently the rest of Kentucky think it lives in The South and though their general attitudes may suggest this, geography does not. Each time we have winter weather here, everyone flips out and they...
